This is the success story of a Bone marrow Transplant in India for cure of Sickle Cell Disease.Baby Favor Benjamin was born to a loving family in Dodoma, Tanzania. She was the younger sister of Master Reachens. The two children were growing normally and excelled in their studies and social life.

Genetic Testing for knowing if a person has Sickle Cell Trait or Sickle Cell Disease

Baby Favor began experiencing health issues in 2022 and was taken to a doctor in Dodoma. The treating doctor, after physically examining her health complaints and symptoms, recommended some blood tests. After carefully evaluating her blood test findings, the treating doctor suspected that she may have sickle cell disease. Baby Favor’s treating doctor recommended genetic testing to determine if she had sickle cell trait or was having sickle cell disease.

Medical Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease in Tanzania

The Genetic testing confirmed that the child had Sickle Cell Disease (Anemia). They approached Benjamin Mpaka Hospital in Dodoma for her medical treatment. A hematologist at the Sickle Cell Treatment Center in Benjamin Mpaka Hospital in Dodoma recommended all the preliminary investigations and prescribed prophylactic antibiotics to lessen the chances of infection, hydroxyurea, folic acid, and blood transfusions for handling the sickle cell crises.

She also had undergone a Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (TCD) for determining the risk of stroke. Unfortunately, she was found to be at a greater risk of suffering from a stroke due to Sickle Cell Disease.

Treating doctors recommended an Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) for Baby Favor for the Cure of Sickle Cell Disease. The family was asked to do a High-Resolution HLA matching of Baby Favor with her Brother Master Reachens.

Unfortunately, the HLA Reports showed that Baby Favor had only a Matching Ratio of 5/10 with her mother and a Matching Ratio of 6/10 with her brother Master Reachens. As the Benjamin Mkapa Sickle Cell Treatment Center in Tanzania performs only 100% HLA-matched bone marrow Transplants, she was referred to get a Haploidentical BMT outside Tanzania.

Baby Favor's Bone Marrow Transplant in India for Cure of Sickle Cell Disease

After Physical examination and taking of Medical History of both Baby Favor and her Bone Marrow Donor brother, her Treating Bone Marrow Transplant Doctor , Dr. Gaurav Dixit started the initial workup for a Haploidentical Bone Marrow Transplant for Baby Favor. Both the children underwent a battery of tests for determining the feasibility of a Bone Marrow Transplant for cure of Sickle Cell Disease for Baby Favor.

She underwent the conditioning regimen of chemotherapy and whole body radiation before the Bone Marrow Transplant at the BMT ICU of her Bone Marrow Transplant Hospital in India.

Baby Favor's Bone Marrow Donor brother Master Reachens was admitted for Bone Marrow Harvesting after getting administered with Gcsf injections for 4-5 days for the mobilization of peripheral collection of the bone marrow harvest.

Baby Favour was infused with the harvested bone marrow from her brother for a Haploidentical Bone Marrow Transplant in India for cure of Sickle Cell Disease. 

Baby Favor's Isolation BMT ICU stay after her Bone Marrow Transplant for cure of Sickle Cell Disease was uneventful and after careful observation of her vitals and other relevant parameters, she was discharged from the Hospital.

A Successful BMT in India for cure of Sickle Cell Disease for a Tanzanian Child

After her discharge from the hospital post a successful BMT for curing Sickle Cell Disease, Baby Favor kept on following her BMT team in the OPD for treatment follow-up. The first chimerism test done after 32 days of her Bone Marrow Transplant has shown more than 99% of donor's bone marrow and a successful Bone Marrow Transplant in India for cure of Sickle Cell Disease for the Tanzanian Child. We repeted the chimerism test after 60 days and it again showed 100% successful Bone Marrow Transplant for cure of Sickle Cell Disease. We had the traditional celebration cake cutting ceremony for Successful Bone Marrow Transplant for the cure of Sickle Cell Disease for Baby Favor.

Baby Favor returned to Tanzania after almost three months of staying in India for her Bone Marrow transplant in India for Cure of Sickle Cell Disease.
