Types of cancers
Disease cancer is uncontrolled and unregulated cell growth. The human cells in the body have a distinctive function to perform and a definite lifespan. After their lifespan, the old cells die and newer cells take their place. Human cells are produced by cell division. Certain regulating factors ensure normal cell division. Some of the cells sometimes escape the regulating factors and start multiplying unregulated and uncontrolled. It could be because of genetic mutations occurring in the Cell’s DNA. Cancers can be broadly divided into Solid Tumors and hematological malignancies (blood cancers).
Solid Tumors
Solid tumors can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumors. Benign tumors do not invade other organs and grow slowly, they are not life-threatening tumors. Malignant tumors may grow rapidly, invade other tissues, travel to distant organs (metastasis), and need immediate medical treatment to save the life of the patient. The malignant (cancerous) tumors can be further subdivided into:
Carcinoma
Carcinomas are the most common of all solid tumors. Carcinomas account for almost 80-90% of all solid cancerous tumors. Carcinoma develops in the epithelium tissues. Epithelium tissues form the outer lining that covers organs. This lining is made up of different types of epithelium cells. Carcinomas are further subdivided depending on the type of epithelium cells involved in the formation of cancerous tumors:
Adenocarcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma
