What is a "Medical Visa to India"?

A medical visa is a permission granted to a foreigner by the government of another country to receive medical treatment in that country. Foreign patients seeking medical treatment in India must get a Medical Visa from their respective countries to India.

  • A Medical Visa to India is permission granted by the Government of India (Ministry of External Affairs) to Uganda patients and their Medical Attendants for traveling to India and staying in India for a short duration (Duration of the Medical Treatment In India).
  • Different types of medical visas are granted to patients and co-travelers (medical attendants, medical professionals). The Medical Visa for Patients is called "MED", and for Medical attendants is called " MED-X".
  • A Medical Visa is usually granted for 60 to 90 days (depending upon the duration of treatment) with a single or triple entry facility.
  • A "Medical Visa" can be extended from the treatment country itself, if the medical treatment duration exceeds the validity of the Medical Visa.

  • Foreign Patients can be granted Indian Medical Visas with valid Passports from their respective countries.
  • The actual reason for coming to India is Medical Treatment for themselves or as co-travelers with a patient as Medical Attendants.

Medical Visa to India for Foreign Patients

Foreign patients willing to come to India for medical treatments must apply for an Indian medical visa for themselves and a medical attendant visa for the medical attendant. Generally, two people can come to India as medical attendants for a Foreign patient. The Indian high commissions and Indian Consulates issue medical visas for foreign patients. Foreign Patients need to apply for medical visas to India online. On successfully submitting their visa application, they will be given an application number, time, and appointment date to appear at the designated Visa Center at the Indian High Commission or Indian Consulate with the specified documents. The government of India has also introduced an E-Medical Visas facility for foreign patients willing to travel to India for Medical Treatments. 

Documents Needed by Foreign Patients for Applying for Indian Medical Visa 

International patients and their medical attendants who want to travel to India for medical treatment must have the following documents with them to submit an online Medical Visa application to the Indian High Commissions or Indian Consulates in their respective countries. 

Valid Passports

Foreign patients and their medical attendants applying for Indian Medical visas must have valid passports of their respective nations with a validity of at least six months ( six months of expiry from the date of arrival in India) and at least two blank pages on the passport for stamping by the Indian immigration officials on patients arrival and departure from India.

A referral Letter from a native Doctor

A Foreign patient applying for a Medical Visa to India must have a referral letter from a local doctor in their respective country describing the patient's medical condition and mentioning that the patient's condition can be better treated outside their native country.

All Supporting Investigation reports.

Foreign Patients applying for Medical Visas to India must also have the related medical investigation reports (like blood test reports, x-ray reports, MRI or CT scan reports).

Visa Invitation and Appointment letter from an Indian Hospital

Foreign patients applying for a Medical Visa to India must have a letter from a reputed Indian Hospital on the Hospital's letterhead and properly typed, signed, and stamped by the Indian Hospital authorities. The letter must mention the name and passport details of the patients and their medical attendants. Recommendation about treatment course and cost from the treating Indian doctor and appointment date with the doctor for commencement of treatment. Visa invitations and appointment letters also need to be sent to the Indian visa consulates and Indian High commissions in the respective countries of foreign patients using the hospital email ID.

Financial standing and Bank Details of the Patient

Patients applying for a Medical Visa to India must also produce their bank details ( last three months' bank transactions) and their financial standings to confirm that they have sufficient funds for their medical treatments in India.

Two Passport Size photographs of the applicants

Guidelines for a Foreign Patient Applying for a Medical Visa to India

Foreign Patients needing regular/paper medical visas must apply online on the Indian High Commission website. They must log in to the Website of the Indian Government for an online Medical Visa Application. The URL for online visa application submission is as mentioned below :

Step by Step process for Foreign patients to apply for an Indian Medical Visa

Foreign patients willing to come to India for Medical treatments must go to the above-mentioned URL for online Medical visa application submission.

  • After visiting the URL, go to the bottom of the page and in the sky blue colored strip, click on the first block "Regular/paper visa application".
  • In the first block, "Country/Region you are applying for a visa from" select your respective country from the drop-down.
  • In the next block, "Indian Mission/Office", select the respective Indian High Commission or Indian Consulate.
  • In the Nationality block, select the respective country name 
  • In the next block, you have to enter your date of birth in the (DD/MM/YYYY) format. For example, a person born on 16th April 1969 must enter 16/04/1969 as their date of birth.
  • Enter your email ID in the next block.
  • Re-enter your email ID to reconfirm your.
  • Enter the expected date of arrival in India in the next block in the (DD/MM/YYYY) format.
  • In the "Visa Type" block, enter Medical Visa.
  • In the Next block, "Purpose", enter from the drop-down "for patients" and the medical attendants escorting the patient must enter " For Foreign nationals coming as a medical attendant".
  • Enter the captcha, as mentioned, and submit.
  • It will guide you to the "Medical Visa Application page".
  • Fill up all the columns and upload the desired documents.
  • After the successful submission of the Medical visa application and uploading of the documents, you will get a notification of the successful submission and VISA application ID, Appointment date, and time.

Appearing in Person at the specified Indian High Commission or Consulate for Medical Visa Application Submission

  • Foreign patients and their Medical attendants should appear in person at the specified Indian High Commission or consulates in the designated countries, on the allocated date and time, with two sets of Medical Visa Application printouts, and two photocopies of the first page of the passport, where your name, picture, and passport details are mentioned and the documents needed. 
  • The Application counter will guide you about the medical visa fee,  and how to pay the medical visa fee.
  • Your Passports, original documents, and visa fee will be accepted by the officers at the counter, and you will be asked to come again for collection of your passports and original documents.
  • On successful granting of Medical visas and Medical attendant visas, your passports will be stamped with your medical visa details.

Indian Medical Visa Fee for Foreign Citizens

Foreign patients applying for an Indian Medical Visa must pay the Medical Visa fee for processing of their Medical Visa to India. Without the Medical Visa Fee, their Medical Visa will not be processed. Indian Medical Visa Processing Fee is determined by the Indian Government for various countries. 

Please Note

  • The Patient or their Caretakers are given the Bank Account Details of the Indian High Commission or consulate in their respective countries or designated visa offices, by the officer at the visa application submission counter at the Indian High Commission or Indian Consulates. They have to deposit the visa fee in the bank account.
  • Visa fees can also be paid by swiping a debit or credit card.

Time for Medical Visa Processing (Medical Visa to India)

Usually, it takes three to five working days for "Regular/Paper Medical Visa to India" processing after submission of the Medical Visa application and paying the Medical Visa processing fee. Patients can check the status of their Medical Visa status by visiting the Indian High Commission website and entering the VISA ID printed on the receipt of their Medical Visa Application submission and their Passport numbers.

E-Medical Visa to India for Foreign Patients

Foreign patients from many countries can also avail of E-Medical Visa facilities for coming to India for a short duration of medical treatments. An e-Medical Visa is given for 60 days from the date of arrival in India with a triple entry facility to India. One patient carrying an e-medical visa can accompany a maximum of two medical attendants with e-medical attendant visas.

  • Foreign patients and their medical attendants can apply online for an e-medical visa and medical attendant e-medical visa at least 4 days before the date of arrival in India.
  • Foreign patients and their medical attendants applying online for e-medical visas must upload a recent front-facing passport-size photograph with a white background while submitting their e-medical visa application.
  • The first page of the passport showing personal details like name, date of birth, nationality, and expiry date of the passport, is to be uploaded mandatorily by the applicant (both the patient and the medical attendants).
  • Foreign patients and their medical attendants must pay the e-medical visa fee, at least 4 days before their travel date to India, otherwise the e-medical visa application will not be processed. Bank transaction charges of 2.5% will be charged additionally on e-Medical Visa fees.
  • Foreign patient and their medical attendants should carry a copy of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) along with him/her at the time of travel.
  • Foreign patients and their medical attendants must confirm that ETA status is shown as 'GRANTED' on the e-medical visa website before the commencement of their journey. Applicants can track the status of their application online by clicking Visa Status.
  • The e-Medical Visa fee payment status updation may take up to 2 hours due to technical reasons/network delays. Before re-applying, the applicants are requested to wait for 2 hours for payment status updating, after final submission of the application form and payment of the fee. In cases where the e-Medical Visa fee has been deducted but the status is not updated, the applicants are advised to verify their payment status by clicking on the 'Verify Payment/Pay Visa Fee' tab or by clicking on the link Verify Payment.
  • Patients coming to India from Yellow fever-affected countries or travelers arriving from these countries must carry a YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CARD at the time of arrival in India, otherwise, they may be quarantined for 6 days upon arrival in India.   • Foreign patients and their medical attendants coming to India on e-medical visas must undergo biometrics validation at the Indian airport itself.

Validity of Medical Visa and Medical Visa Extension

The Indian Medical Visa for Foreign Patients is usually for 3 months. It can be extended while staying in India on approval of FFRO of the respective state of India if the patient has to overstay because of continuation and completion of medical treatment.
