Brachytherapy for prostate cancer treatment in India.

Brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy ( cancer treatment ) where radioactive elements are sealed inside a seed , capsule , pellet or wire and are put implanted inside the body of a cancer patient by using either a needle or a catheter. At CMCS Health , we are associated with Best Indian radiation oncologist , who are well experienced in brachytherapy for prostate cancer treatment in India.

Brachytherapy is universally accepted prostate cancer treatment worldwide. It is used as monotherapy for men with early stage prostate cancer and also for some intermediate risk prostate cancers and in combination with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for men with larger prostate cancers.

The advantage of brachytherapy in prostate cancer treatment is that radioactive material implant allows a higher dose of radiation given to limited area and thus minimizing the damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

In Brachytherapy for prostate cancer treatment in India , a radiation oncologist places the encapsulated radioactive substance directly on tumor or surrounding tissues with the help of a needle or catheter. The duration of radioactive implant in body of patient depends on location of cancer , stage of cancer and overall health of patient. CT Scans and Ultrasound during the brachytherapy helps the radiation oncologist in placing the encapsulated radioactive material precisely on tumor or nearby tissues.

Brachytherapy for prostate cancer are usually given as either low dose rate ( LDR ) brachytherapy or high dose rate ( HDR ) brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy for prostate cancer , if done by a well experienced radiation oncologist and after proper evaluation of the size and stage of tumor is found to be as effective as conventional external beam radiation therapy and in some cases even surgery .

Brachytherapy is very useful for those prostate cancer patient where the cancer is localized and has not metastasized. In some cases brachytherapy is combined with external-beam radiation therapy, including stereotactic body radiation therapy, to get the best results.

Other types of radiation therapy for prostate cancer treatment in India :

  • External beam radiation therapy ( EBRT )
  • Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy ( 3D-CRT)
  • intensity modulated radiation therapy ( IMRT )
  • Image guided radiation therapy ( IGRT )
  • Volumetric modulated arc therapy ( VMAT )
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) also known as gamma knife or cyberKnife

Hysterectomy can be classified as simple hysterectomy ( removal of uterus along with cervix ) , radical hysterectomy ( removal of uterus with surrounding tissues , cervix and upper part of vagina connected to cervix and some lymph nodes ) and modified radical hysterectomy.

There are different ways for doing the hysterotomy in a patient.

  • Abdominal Hysterectomy is done through a surgical incision in the front of abdomen. Abdominal hysterectomy may require hospitalization of 3 to 4 days and complete recovery takes almost 4 to 5 weeks.
  • Vaginal hysterectomy involves removing the uterus through the vagina.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy is done with the help of a laparoscope and small incision or cut as compared to open hysterotomy and uterus is removed through a small cut in vagina. Breast cancers are one of the most common cancers among women and treatments of breast cancer involves breast cancer surgery , Chemotherapy , Radiation therapy , Targeted drug therapy and hormone therapy. Surgery is the mainstay of breast cancer treatments.

Breast cancer surgery in India :

Surgery is the mainstay of breast cancer treatments . Breast cancer surgery can be combined with radiation therapy , chemotherapy , targeted therapy hormone therapy , and immunotherapy.

There are two main types of surgery performed for breast cancer treatment .

1. Mastectomy :

Mastectomy surgery for breast cancer treatment involves removal of complete breast.

Mastectomy surgery can be further classified as:

Radical mastectomy :

Radical mastectomy involves removal of breast tissue, nipple, areola and skin but not all the lymph nodes and the pectoral (chest wall) muscles under the breast.

It is performed rarely now and only if the surgeons feel that cancer has grown or may grow into pectoral muscles.

Modified Radical mastectomy ( MRM)

Modified radical mastectomy involves removal of breast tissues , nipple , areola , skin and all the lymph nodes under the arm ( axillary lymph nodes dissection ) .

Skin or Nipple sparing mastectomy :

The skin or nipple sparing breast cancer surgery is a variation of the total mastectomy and is normally performed to allow the surgeon to perform breast reconstruction. The surgery removes the same amount of breast tissue. The difference is that the surgeon leaves the breast skin (skin-sparing) and sometimes the nipple (nipple-sparing).

Breast reconstruction can be done at the same time of mastectomy or later.

Double mastectomy :

When both the breasts are removed , it is called double mastectomy or bi lateral mastectomy.

2. Breast conservation surgery :

Not all breast cancers require complete removal of breast , if the size of tumor is not too big and it is localized , doctor may perform a surgery with removal of tumor and safe margins along the breast tissues. Breast conservation surgery are also called lumpectomy. It is usually followed by radiation therapy , chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

Sometime chemotherapy is given to patient before the surgery to reduces the size of tumor , it is called neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Breast oncoplasty or breast reconstruction surgery :

When lumpectomy or breast conservation surgery is done for a patient, many times it leaves a bad scar or disfigurement in a patient.

Breast reconstruction or breast oncoplasty surgery is combination of breast cancer surgery with cosmetics or plastic surgery to hide the scar or restore the form of breast.

Breast reconstruction or breast oncoplasty surgery can be done at the same time of lumpectomy or afterwards.

Prostate Cancer treatment in India.

Prostate cancer treatment in India :

Prostate Cancer is a one of the serious and life threatening medical condition affecting prostate. Prostate cancer usually affect elderly and above 65 year old men but it may affect younger men too. Prostate cancer is the second largest cancer in men.Prostate cancer generally metastasizes to bones. Since the growth of prostate cancer is slow it may not affect or diagnosed in early stages but there are instances where the cancerous prostate cells have grown rapidly. We are associated with Best Indian Urology surgeon well versed with da Vinci robotic surgery , Medical oncologist well versed with chemotherapy and immunotherapy and Radiation oncologist for comprehensive and complete Prostate cancer treatment in India.

Who are at risk for prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer affects men above 50 years of age.Over a period of time the survival rate in prostate cancer have improved dramatically from 30% in 1970's to 80% presently.
Prostate cancer may affect any men above the age of 50 years, but the African or African Caribbean are at a three fold higher risk than white people. The man whose father or brother have been diagnosed with prostate cancer stand two and a half time higher chances than the men who never had a prostate cancer family history.
Black men are at three times higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer as compared to white men.
Some studies suggest that men among the populations where consumption of "red meat" is more common are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.

Prevention of Prostate Cancer

Certain life style changes may reduce risk of prostate cancer. Quitting smoking and regular physical exercises at least for 30 minutes a day and five days a week can cut down risk of prostate cancer. Reduction in consumption of animal fat or red meat also cut down the risk for prostate cancer. A study although not confirmed that a diet high in tomatoes may also be helpful in reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

How Prostate Cancer is diagnosed?

Prostate cancer is usually diagnosed through screening as symptoms appear quite late in patients. The usual diagnostic procedures are a blood test called PSA or prostate specific antigen test. A higher PSA test result indicated possibility of prostate cancer. Although it may be non confirmatory too as Prostatitis may also cause elevated PSA levels.
DRE (Digital Rectal examination) may also suggest presence of prostate cancer, where a qualified and experienced doctor puts a gloved lubricated finger inside the rectum of the patient to feel any bump or hard surface on prostate suggesting a cancerous growth.
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) or Transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy are more confirmatory and reliable tests for diagnosing the presence of prostate cancer in a patient.

Robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer treatment- Dr. Prof. Anant Kumar.

Prostate cancer treatment in India | Robotic Prostatectomy.

Prostate cancer surgery is recommended for those patients where cancer is localized and has not metastasized. At CMCS Health, we are associated with the best Indian Uro-oncology surgeons for both laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery and Robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer treatments in India.

da Vinci robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer treatment in India has considerable advantages over conventional laparoscopic prostatectomy as it not only empowers the surgeon to overcome shortcomings associated with both open prostatectomy and laparoscopic prostatectomy but also offers better patient compliance. We are associated with the most experienced Uro-Oncology surgeons of India well versed in Robotic prostatectomy .

During a robot-assisted prostatectomy for prostate cancer treatment in India, a three-dimensional endoscope and equipment for high-resolution images and enhanced field of vision are used to provide a magnified view of delicate tissues and structures like blood vessels, nerves, and muscles surrounding the prostate gland.

Advantage of robot-assisted prostatectomy in India :

As the incisions made during the da Vinci robotic prostatectomy are much smaller in size, they reduce the chances of any post-surgery infections, minimize the damage to surrounding tissues, and have lesser hospital stay for patients.

During the robotic prostatectomy the surgeon sits at a computer console and manipulates the tiny wristed instruments that offer greater mobility than the human wrist and thus offers a better precise surgery.

Which patients are best suited for robot assisted prostatectomy:

Prostate cancer patients whose prostate cancer is in T1 or T2 stage , that is the cancer is localized , are the ideal for robotic prostatectomy however your treating doctor will decide if robotic prostatectomy is best suited for you.

Treatment of prostate cancer is like the treatment of any other cancer. It involves all three fields of cancer treatments like Cancer Surgery, Medical oncology ( Chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted or immunotherapy ), radiation therapy ( for brachytherapy, IMRT, IGRT, 3D CRT, VMAT, or SBRT) for complete and comprehensive prostate cancer treatment in India.
